President Trump, addressing US private sector defense partners in a closed doors meeting:
"I don't like to do this often, and I know you all know better than anyone that I definitely don't like to do this often, but it needs to be said. On behalf of the United States government, I apologize that we screwed up with what happened over the rights to the F-22.
"Look, I know that many people at home are watching how our relationship will turn out for the future. Some are eager for more chances to go after me, and others are scared that we might be losing our brightest friends in the private sector. And I know there are many abroad who are ecstatic at the chance to tap into American ingenuity, should they even get the chance.
"And, I mean, look at the world around us! China, as I've been saying for a very long time, has been after us from day one. We've got that whole fiasco in Spain, absolutely disgusting. The world is looking to the United States for leadership, and we need to show that we are united together.
"Americans are the smartest in the world. We're the best, the greatest. Any problem we get, we'll solve it, easy peasy. And our defense industry is the shinning example of this Americanism.
"I know what works and what doesn't work for the private sector. And it's about time that my administration and I remind our friends in the defense industry of our faith in America.
"Enjoy the crab cakes, the fine wine, and the other things we've got out here for you today. You deserve it.
"Let's go make American Great Again."
